Watching Watchmen

This isn't a review, because I feel compelled to respect review dates.

But I just got back from a screening and it's a review I look forward to writing. I bought the first collected edition and loved it, but I also loved Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and was underwhelmed by the movie version of the former and appalled by the latter.

Not so Zack Snyder's Watchmen... and that's all I'll say for now.

I was curious about Watchmen after all the press. I admit I never read the graphic novel, I was never really into comics. Then at NY ComiCon Watchmen was added to the roster at the last minute. David Gibbons was there and we got to see the first 18 minutes. After that I couldn't wait for the next month to go by to see the movie. I bought and read the graphic novel and am eagerly anticipating the release in two short days. The title sequence alone had me in chills, and remember this was before I read the novel and even knew who those people were. Great to hear it made such a good impression on you. Makes the excitement greater with each person giving it a glowing recommendation. Bring on Watchmen!

I like Zack's Dawn of the Dead and 300. I hope I'll like his Watchmen.

I read the graphic novel and I was blown away. Just the story, characters, and the depth of it all is outstanding. I was truly moved by this book. As for the movie, I can't even wait until Friday. I praise Zack Snyder for his work on Dawn of the Dead and 300. I heard he changed a few things, while that may upset some people, I'm actually kind of glad. Why make the movie the same as the graphic novel? Filmmakers should make it their own. I love Snyder's visual style, one of the few in Hollywood that actually have one. I was also underwhelmed by V for Vendetta, but nevertheless enjoyed it for its message... and for Hugo Weaving's role. The League of Extraordinary Gentleman was a disappointment to all. Alan Moore deserves better. I don't blame him for not wanting to see Watchmen, but it does sound kind of stupid. Anyway, can't wait to read your review, Maitland.

OK, well, as the lone voice of dissent... I can't contain myself. I enjoyed about 90% of the movie version of Leage of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Was it the graphic novel come to life? No. Did I like it? Yes. Will I apologize for liking it? Yah, right.

I think it's just so unlikely that Watchmen will be a similar universally panned tragedy.

Now if only someone would make a movie out of Millar's Ronin (cause I liked it a little better than TDK) and The Bozz Chronicles, most of my pet comic dream projects will have come true!

Anyone else hoping for some movie translations of their faves?

Kind of, John. When I read Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, I started to notice a few things. It was obvious that Miller's prequel novel, Batman: Year One, was the main story for Batman Begins. TDKR was written a year before that I think, and it was set after Batman had retired. I saw that The Dark Knight movie was sort of based on Miller's book. It is hard to explain, but if you read them, you could see the similarities between the book and the film. For example, the title of the move. LOL. And also, the main villains: Joker and Two Face. Both were in the novel and the film. I watched an interview with Zack Snyder about which graphic novel he would love to do. He said he would love to do a film adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, because that is his favorite graphic novel. But since they already have a new batman franchise going on right now, he wouldn't be able to make it, and I completely understand that. Also, Joker and Two Face were taken out of the picture in TDK so it would be weird for them to be in a film version of TDKR. But nonetheless, TDKR would have made a GREAT film, especially if Snyder were to direct it. The story was so epic and bad ass.

I was really very curious when I heard so much about this movie. So I just decided to watch this movie and went with my friend and I can't believe that we all loved this movie so much that now we wanted to buy a DVD of this movie.
