Attack of the monster beach party movie pastiches — kind of cool and way camp

Hallelujah! My technical problems have been solved (it only took my web host's IT department a week or so, but hey — I'm trying to count my blessings) and I can post again.

So to celebrate, I added reviews of Charles Busch's Psycho Beach Party and the recent Monster Beach Party A-Go Go.

The're both flawed, but Psycho Beach Party features an early turn by the then-unknown Amy Adams, and Monster Beach Party A-Go Go has a slammin' sound track. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Maitland, I think you are quite the critic, but I have to say, Psycho Beach Party is my number one guilty pleasure.

That being said, I have finally come to terms with the fact that it isn't quite the brilliant/misunderstood film that I once considered it to be.

It is just one of my favorite films of all time.

Does that make sense?

Modern movies that are done in the style of Russ Meyer or as sexploitation just never seem to do it for me. It's never feels "authentic" and I have no idea why.

But I think it may be the same as when I listen to vintage jazz from the 20s and 30s. Hearing the same band record an identical song in the 1950s just never has the same feel, due to the extra bass and recording advances.

And in movies or music, even when they try to fake it (like "Grindhouse") it always feels like an homage instead of authentic.

Plus: "broad laughs at the expense of naive 1950s and '60s youth-culture preoccupations" sounds like a real turn-off.
